LINDA MOORLAND WAS IN TEARS when she opened the front door for Deputy Happ. He immediately saw the blood on her lips. “Are you injured, ma’am?”

“What?” she said, puzzled.

“You have blood on your lips.”

Linda wiped a hand across her mouth and looked at her fingers. “No,” she said. “That’s Blake’s blood, from when I performed CPR. He had bitten his tongue.” Then she started at the beginning and explained everything that had transpired.

“I’m no doctor,” Happ said. “But I’ll bet he woke up, delirious, and just wandered off outside. Don’t worry, I’ll go find him. You just stay here in case he comes home.” Then he added, “Can you tell me what he was wearing?”

Linda motioned to her own pajamas. “The same as these,” she said. “We got matching pairs for Christmas. It was kind of a joke.” The pajamas were made of blue flannel with pictures of palm trees and surfboards.

Happ managed to restrain a smile. “Okay,” he said. “I’ll find him.”

He assured Linda once more that everything would be fine, and then headed out the door. He searched the surrounding area for well over two hours. There was no sign of Blake Moorland anywhere. When Happ returned to the Moorland’s home to speak with Linda, he had been shocked by what he found. The front door was wide open, as was the sliding-glass door on the rear of the house. Both cars were in the garage, and the old V-dub bus was parked on the street. The family dog was in the backyard, sitting in the snow, staring into the distance; he paid no attention to Happ’s presence.

Inside, Happ found Linda’s purse, wallet and car keys on the table, along with her cell phone. All of her husband’s belongings were there, as well. There were no signs of a struggle and Linda hadn’t left a note behind explaining her absence. Apparently, Linda Moorland had joined her husband. And now they were both missing.
